Bird’s Nest Restaurant in Thailand

Image
Bird’s Nest Restaurant is located in Soneva Kiri Eco Resort in Thailand and has become one of the main attractions there. The tree pods or nests are in the tree, 16 feet above the ground. It gives you and your party the privacy, as well as the unique opportunity to admire spectacular view while dining. This is probably the most exciting restaurant to work in: the waiter uses a zip line to deliver food and drinks! The restaurant is definitely a unique one, so do not forget to visit once in Thailand. Exploring Kapuskasing, Canada

Image
Today we’re continuing on our journey across North America with the Exploring My Hometown guest post series. Please welcome Becky from Trekking with Becky as she takes us on a little tour of Kapuskasing, Ontario. I’ve been reading Becky’s blog for a while now, and am always so inspired by her journeys around the world. No matter how far you travel, though – it’s lovely to come back home! Exploring Kapuskasing, Ontario -by Becky Osawa When I tell people that I’m originally from a small town in northern Ontario, Canada, I usually get asked if I’m from Barrie, which is a little north of Toronto. When I say that I’m from northern Ontario, I really mean NORTH…if you drive pretty much non-stop north of Toronto for about 9 hours, you’ll reach my small hometown, Kapuskasing (Kah-pus-kay-sing) in Canada. Kapuskasing, Canada It’s RARE to even come across Torontonians who have heard of Kapuskasing since it’s s...

14 Unromantic Valentine’s Day Destinations

Image
Ah, Valentine’s Day. An occasion for the attached to labour under the unyielding pressure of human relationships and expectation; a time to rinse out the dregs of your wallet on marked-up supermarket flowers and overcrowded restaurants, before returning home to carelessly combine your unmentionable flesh; a time to snatch profound sadness from the jaws of apparent joy. Have we succeeded in making the occasion seem like a terrifying feat of endurance and futility? Good! That sets the tone for our collection of the worst places on the planet you could take your loved one to complete the arbitrary ritual of Valentine’s Day. Dubai, UAE In many ways Dubai is an unabashedly erotic city: sizzling heat, a veneer of decadence, a building like the world’s most fabulously erect penis. But this is somewhat undermined by the fact that kissing in public is an offence punishable by a prison sentence/deportation. Bit of a mood killer. Hull, UK According to a recent poll from Hotels.com, Brits ...

Ten tales of absurdity from 2014 Right, we’re almost there folks: a new year beckons. May your 2015s be filled with adventure, silliness and luck – the good kind. Before we go, we thought we’d cast an eye over our contributions to the global news machine in the last year to see which articles were the most read among your good selves. In doing so we were reminded of some truly bizarre things that happened in various locations on our little space rock in 2014. As always, we faithfully – sometimes gleefully – reported on as much as we possibly could, from the discovery of a world map showing the biggest and smallest willies across the globe to the fiance who faked his own death to avoid his impending marriage. Without further ado, we present to you the ten most read gapyear.com news stories of the year! 10th place goes to… Osama bin Laden’s heavy metal bar If you aren’t easily offended, and enjoy the sounds of Ozzy Osbourne and Iron Maiden...

New York on a Backpacker Budget

Image
I love New York City.  It’s one of my favorite places to explore because you never know what you’ll find there. But some think that it can be a bit expensive.  The truth is, it doesn’t have to be. With just a little bit of planning and research, you can find fun places to explore and activities that won’t have your wallet screaming for mercy by the end of your visit. Here are a few to get you started. Take a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge Some of the common sites people often visit when they come to New York are the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, and Times Square, but Brooklyn is the new place to be. Spanning 5,989 feet, the Brooklyn Bridge is still considered one of New York’s most famous landmarks. The views from the bridge of the Manhattan skyline, which includes Freedom Tower, are breath-taking, and on any given day, you’re bound to meet an interesting individual with a story. Just two quick tips if you plan to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Stay out of the bike...

My Travel Tote Collection

Image
Happy New Year wherever in the world you are! I thought it was about time we talked about my recently released travel tote collection and what is on the horizon for World of Wanderlust in 2020. The World of Wanderlust Travel Tote Collection If you’re new here, I first started travelling solo back in 2012 and began this blog shortly thereafter. Eight years later I am still travelling the world and still sharing my travel tips on this blog. But most of all I am still in complete disbelief that I get to travel the world for a job! Last year I launched a passion project I have been working on for quite some time. For years I have been trying to reduce my environmental footprint, especially because I travel so much for work. I believe every small decision you make will leave a larger impact on our planet. It was back in Los Angeles a little over a year ago when I decided I wanted to take my own small choices and make them into a tangible product of my own. I ...

Checking In to the Atlantis The Palm

Image
Ever since growing up watching the Mary-Kate and Ashley travel films, I have longed for the day I could stay at The Atlantis . Granted, the film was made at the first Atlantis (in the Bahamas), but nonetheless my check-in to The Atlantis Dubai felt long overdue. On previous stopovers to Dubai I have gone out of my way to visit the Atlantis. My first time in Dubai I made a special trip over to experience the Aquaventure Waterpark ( circa 2013 ) and just a couple of years ago in 2017 revisited the property with my little brother in tow to explore the Lost Chambers Aquarium. For certain this is an attraction in itself when visiting Dubai, but to stay at the Atlantis the Palm was an entirely different experience. What is Included in your Stay One of the biggest draw cards to staying at the Atlantis the Palm is the exclusivity offered to in-house guests. There are a number of areas at the Atlantis for in-house guests only, including the impressive lobby and private bea...
